Best Beaches

Salcombe is known for having the best beaches in England, with sparkling seas and unspoilt sands it’s really quite beautiful. Whether you want a picturesque hidden gem, some family fun with the dog, a secluded cove for the day or a beach to try out your water sports – there is a beach for you in Salcombe.

North Sands – The closest beach to Salcombe town is North Sands, a stroll away from the town centre is where you’ll find this popular family beach, with shallow water making it a perfect beach for paddling and swimming safely. It is also a dog friendly beach, therefore, your fury friends are more than welcome to enjoy the day out with you. If you feel peckish – there are plenty of cafes near by, so take your pick!

South Sands – A short ferry ride from Whitestrand Quay is the beach known for water sports, South Sands. ‘Sea Kayak Salcombe’ provides Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and more to hire. Dogs are allowed however, unfortunately not throughout the months of May-September…probably best with all those water sport activities going on.

North Sands

East Portlemouth Beach – Salcombe ferry goes straight over to East Portlemouth Ferry, dropping you right off at your destination. It has a series of sandy coves perfect for sunbathing and is also a dog friendly beach with some great facilities close by.

Mill Bay – If you’re a rock-pool enthusiast, you will love Mill Bay. Plus, you can bring the dog and there is a small car park for those who would rather drive to the beach than take the ferry. This big sandy beach is great for spreading out. One of the best ways to get over to Mill Bay is by the East Portlemouth ferry and then a short walk down the coastline.

Sunny Cove Beach – A 10 minute walk from Mill Bay will find you at the Sunny CoveIt is a beautiful sandy beach with relatively gentle waves. It’s quiet, with not much around making it perfect for those who want a bit of a seclusion.

Food & Drink

After you’ve read “Salcombe Sensations”. Here’s a few restaurants and bars to tantalise those taste buds.

The Winking Prawn – One of the most famous beach cafes in Salcombe. Known for its delicious BBQ goodies. Enjoy fresh seafood and a lovely view of the coastline.

The Crab Shed –  Located on The Fish Quay this is a great spot for a seafood lover to grab some lunch.

Seafood

Island Street Bar & Grill– Burgers, Steaks and BBQ ribs? Yeah. Come to this waterfront Bar & Grill.

Cranch’s Sweet Shop – This old-fashioned family business has been selling the good stuff since 1986 on Fore Street. Packaged in those traditionally cute pink & white striped paper bags. From boiled sweets to toffees; I’ll bet they have what childhood sweet you’re looking for.

Sweets

Nightlife

Salcombe’s nightlife scene is more about the good old classic British pubs and a few bars.

The Ferry Inn – Placed right on the water’s edge (making it a great spot to sip on a few drinks). You can overlook a perfect sunset while watching the waves gently drench the sands below or perch on a bar stool inside, with it’s lovely exposed brick and warm log fireplace. Keeping you toasty in those autumnal/winter months.

Victoria Inn – This multi-award winning, classic Devon pub found down Fore Street  is worth a visit. The interior includes wooden tables, rustic slate flooring and a large beer garden, essential for those summer nights.

Island Street Bar & Grill – I’ve mentioned this Bar & Grill before. Whilst having some great grilled grub, they also have live music every weekend and happy hour 2-4-1 cocktails every Friday!

Cocktail

Transportation

Ferry Service – There are four ferry services in operation throughout Salcombe. East Portlemouth (available all year round), Kingsbridge (available May to September), South Sands (available Easter to October) & Dartmouth (available May to September).

Boat Hire– If you’d like to go on your own adventure, you can always hire a boat from Whitestrand. Spend the day at the beach, go fishing or just go for a nice scenic float around the coves.

Boat Hire

Taxi – In Salcombe, I would advise you to pre-book your taxis when you can, as there isn’t a designated taxi rank available. Some of the best that I personally found helpful were:-
1. Salcombe Taxis: 07938 470600
2. Totally Taxis: 07542 626545
3. 24/7 Taxis Kingsbridge & Salcombe: 07946 322824

Park and Ride– Salcombe’s park and ride bus service is a great way to get around the town. Located on Bonfire Hill with an adult single ticket costing Ā£1.10, and a return of Ā£1.70.

Explore The Cause

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, and have seasonal lifeguards to look after people on busy beaches. They have a Flood Rescue Team which helps those affected by flooding.

RNLI

Their Community Safety teams explain the risks and share safety knowledge with anyone going out to sea or to the coast by influencing, supervising and educating people of the dangers that could occur.

They have an international team which work with like-minded organisations to help tackle drowning in communities at risk all around the world.
